This year the Annual Photocarrefour Exhibition will open on the 28th of September, whilst the Open Call will go out on the 1st of August till the 14th of September, 2019. Our theme for this year is “Recentering Africa in a Digital Universe”.

Photocarrefour is a photography organization that brings together photographers and photography lovers alike with the ultimate aim of advancing the medium. We do this through Workshops, Artist Talks, Photo Walks, School programs, as well as Exhibitions. Every year, Photocarrefour organizes its main event; a photography Exhibition open to photographers of all levels across Africa. Our themes are centred on historical, social and economic issues that affect Africa and Africans. As a continent with a high youth population and evolving digital space, Photocarrefour seeks to explore the impact of Technology on Africa and its reinvention of an African identity; traditions, heritage and aspiration.

Over the years there had been a well-defined view of what it means to be from Africa or African, terms such as Pan-Africanism, negritude, African-American tried to give pride to African culture and heritage that all Africans aspired to. Today the advancement of Technology and the digital world is reinventing these terms in ways that are complex to describe. Despite the growing sentiments of nationalism and conservative view, the world is seeing a new generation who have missed out on the old traditions that defined us. African Traditions are no longer been passed down. A parent today is eager to pass down an Ipad to her son rather than old cultural norms. Traditional roles of men and women in society and family are changing, beliefs are more and more been tested with logic and sentiments of heritage are been put on the shelf. We are interested in how these changes are shaping a new identity moving forward and what traditions will be emerging in this new African Identity. Our Open call will challenge participants to graphically show some of this evolution using their camera. To get them started we will be suggesting works from accomplished photographers who have done works that reflect this thinking. Artist such as

Cristina de Middel, Afronaut

Andrew Esiebo Na God!

Osbourne Macharia
